Do You Celebrate Earth Day Every Day?

Each year on April 22, people from all around the world engage in activities to support and celebrate the earth. These festivities began in 1970, when Sen. Gaylord Nelson took to the streets to promote conservation involvement and awareness. His actions inspired the United States Environmental Protection Agency and brought about the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts. It is inspirational that the passion of one person can lead changing the world, as we know it.

While it is difficult to tackle pollution as a whole, great accomplishments begin with baby steps. Many people don’t realize that everyday activities contribute to air, land, and water pollution. As a result, 80% of the items in landfills could have been recycled.

Some of the main contributors to water pollution are pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, household chemicals, and animal waste. The leading cause of air pollution today in America is auto emissions. They increase green house gases and contribute to global warming.

People are not safe from pollution indoors either, a 15 year study by The National Cancer Association found that woman who work in the home have a 54% higher risk of developing cancer then women who work outside the home. The study concluded that this is a direct result from the chemicals in household cleaning products.
